FRAMED HOUSE
Project/ Status:
Residential (New Erection), Completed
Location:
Jalan Keris, Singapore
The parameter of the design brief was simple – to recreate a terrace house that is bright and airy for the growing young family.
Imagining the house as a giant vertical air-well, the floor plates are layered like a pyramid. With bigger void spaces at the attic and smaller ones stacked below, a continuous light shaft is created at the centre of the house, allowing for continuous stream of natural lighting and airflow within.
Taking advantage of the all-year round sea breeze and unobstructed view, the attic holds a multi-purpose family room that overlooks the outdoor gym. Bedrooms are tucked at front and rear ends of the middle storey, leaving behind a generous double-volume space between that could be easily repurposed as play area for the kids. The ground floor is ultimately a continuous linear open space that allows large family gatherings and playdates to happen.
The choice of material for the external ‘skin’ of the house, a framed series of rotatable timber screens, is a natural complement to the porous and breathable spaces within. More than just a protective shield to the sun and rain, this flexible feature façade grants the home owner with a varying degree of privacy control and visual connection to the outside.
