THEN & NOW

Project/ Status:
Residential (Additions & Alterations), Completed

Location:
Gardenia Road, Singapore

Anchored by the existing shell of the house, a new grey cladded wing nestles itself on the side, creating a contrasting façade of old and new. Viewed from outside, the house adopts an enigmatic mass and reveals very little of the life within – an important requirement set by the home owners.

In remodelling the house, the main entrance is shifted to the side, where guests and close friends alike are first treated to a luscious garden view. Inside, the interconnected living, dining and kitchen unfurl as one open space. Framed by floor-to-ceiling glass doors, the ground storey enjoys a generous amount of daylight and uninterrupted view of the surrounding outdoor greenery. Stripped away from its past interior, dark marble flooring and taupe furnishing with hints of gold are now in place, giving the house an air of minimal-luxe.

Retreating to the upper storey, a blend of neutral beige and warm wood takes over. Here, a sense of spaciousness is maintained as ceiling heights are maximized and pitched in parallel to the original profile of the roof. Rows of discreetly angled sunscreens are placed against bedroom windows, providing a careful balance between privacy and natural lighting to the occupants within.
